Friends of Lebanon aims to promote a deeper understanding of the issues effecting Lebanon and its prospects for a peaceful future.  This suggested reading list is not intended to be an endorsement.  Rather, items listed below are resources for research that provide practical information and that prompt contemplation and dialogue.

“The War of Lebanon: So That History Doesn’t Repeat Itself!” (2004 documentary by Omar Al Issawi)

“Khiam 2000 – 2007” relays the 1999 and 2007 testimonies of six former detainees of Israel’s infamous prison in Southern Lebanon.  (2007 documentary by Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas)

“With God On Our Side” reviews the impact of Christian Zionism (2010 documentary by Porter Speakman Jr.)

Five Broken Cameras A Palestinian farmer’s first-hand account of life and non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village surrounded by Israeli settlements. (2011 documentary feature by directors Guy Davidi and Emad Burnat)

“The Lebanese Rocket Society” details the “strange tale of the Lebanese space race” 1960—1967. (2012 documentary by Khalil Joreige and Joana Hadjithomas)

“Where Should The Birds Fly” is the first film about Gaza made by Palestinians living the reality of Israel’s siege and blockade of Gaza and focuses on the 23-day war of 2008/2009.  (2013 documentary by Fida Qishta)

“On the Side of the Road” is a film about the collective denial in Israel about the ethnic cleansing of the 1948 Nabka.  Israeli journalist and former West Bank settler Lia Tarachansky captures a rarely-seen inside look into why Israelis do what they do, and how they see themselves in the changing Middle East. (2013 documentary by Lia Tarachansky)

An investigative documentary on the Israeli arms industry and how its weaponry has been tested in the laboratories of Lebanon and Palestine. (2013 documentary by Yotam Feldman)

Omar is a tense, dramatic thriller about betrayal and insoluable moral dilemmas in Occupied Palestine. (2013 dramatic feature film by director Hany Abu-Assad)

‘The Wooden Rifle’ is a 47-minute documentary sharing the tales of five Lebanese in Beirut, as they reflect on how their lives have been affected by their country’s civil war in the 1970s and 80s. (Filmmaker: Alfouz Tanjour, 2015)

Censored Voices is a June 2015 film revealing the original 1967 recordings of Israeli soldiers speaking of their experience in the 1967 ‘Six-Day War’ (84 minute documentary by Mor Loushy).

The Occupation of the American Mind is a detailed, research-based documentary (2016) that examines how American news media coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has influenced American public opinion with its pro-Zionist Israel bias.

‘How Beirut’s Commodore Hotel became a safe haven for world media’ is a 26-minute documentary exploring the street fighting, sieges and kidnappings that were all part of Lebanon’s 15-year civil war and the 1982 Israeli invasion, as witnessed by the iconic hotel. (Filmmaker: Abdallah El Binni, 2018)


‘How the Holiday Inn became a symbol of the Lebanese Civil War’ is a 25-minute documentary review of the Lebanese civil war and the role played by the Holiday Inn, a hotel whose strategic location also cemented the sectarian divide of the city between the Christian East and the Muslim West. (Filmmaker: Abdallah El Binni, 2018)
